Welcome back to another installment of Latticed Learning!  Today I'll be sharing the nineteenth week of our journey with you.  You'll get a chance to see what we did, the resources we used (click here to see what we're using week after week), and hopefully come away with lots of fun ideas for things to do with your own little one!

Bible Lesson

Fiery Furnace (pages 247-250 in this Bible and 161-167 in this one)

Memory Verse

Proverbs 20:11 - This is the nineteenth song on this album, which I've raved about before.  I also created this card:

We post it on the fridge (and then add it to a mini photo album from the local dollar store when we take it down).  I'm always amazed how quickly Gv can say her verse - minus the reference - each week!

You can download your own copy of this card for free here!

Want the whole set right now?  Get them here.

Saint

Sebastian (I know nothing about the lives of the saints, but when I saw these cuter-than-cute cards, I decided they gave me the perfect excuse to learn!  They're honestly more for me than Gv at this point, although she can put the name to the card after having it up on the fridge and talking about it all week.)

Letter

(Print out your free "S" phonics card here!)

Topic to Explore

Space

Shape

Rectangle (I'm kind of going in order of vertices/sides and each one will last for several weeks.)

Number

18 (Like I said in this post about the alphabet, we'll talk about all (well, maybe not all) the numbers every week, but I'm choosing one to focus on each week and you'll see some repetition as time goes on with a few of them.)

Best Books We Read This Week

The Solar System - This book is so visually appealing, I could look at it for hours. Gv loved it, too - despite the fact that the facts were way above her head.

Planets and the Solar System - This is an ancient book I had in my classroom that had been passed down by another teacher when she retired.  No photo or link, but we read it.

The Magic School Bus Lost in the Solar System - This well-worn book from my classroom was always a huge hit with my students and is already a huge hit with Gv, too - especially since we watched the video that goes with it.

Other Great Books We Read

Out of all the space books I have, those three were really the only ones I felt were appropriate to haul out for Gv to see at this point.  That was just as well, because she's still been obsessed with all the Geography and Art books from the past two weeks!

Songs We Played By

I went through all the children's songs on my iPod and created a playlist just for this week.  Here are some of the best selections from our list:

Even a Child from this album helped Gv learn our memory verse

An Adventure in Space from this album was easily Gv's favorite - the song takes kids along for a space flight, where they can blast off in the rocket and then float around before landing again back on Earth.  Gv asked me to "play it again!" every time.

Interplanet Janet from the album set I shared here was another fun favorite (along with its matching video).

We listened to Holst's The Planets pretty much constantly.

We listened to this an awful lot, too.

And so many more, but I'll let you search through your own music collection to see what types of songs you can add to your own playlist.

Videos We Explored

We watched this cute movie to go along with the fiery furnace story.

Gv did "S" things on this site.

We watched this clip and a few of the others for the letter "S."

This video went along with the song.

And one of the fun mini-movies on here matched a book that we read.

How We Played

We did a few things to learn more about the fiery furnace:

I first printed out two sets of these male Bible stick puppets.

Gv cut out one set (4 men) and stuck them on a sheet of yellow paper using double-sided tape.

Then she painted over the page with red and orange paint.

After it all dried, we removed the men and saw the four figures in the flames:

We took the other set of puppets, cut them out, then colored in all but one (that's the angel).  We glued them all to craft sticks to use in our fiery furnace paper bag theater.

Glue the white angel down with the black lines facing the stick.
I just cut out a big circle on one side of the bag and then Gv glued wads of red, orange and yellow tissue paper along the bottom inside of the hole and along the top.

Then she could use the puppets to re-enact the story on her own:

I loved this idea, but we changed it up just a bit:

I still wrote the words on the wall in white crayon...

But then Gv & I rubbed over it all with marker, not paint.

We also did several things (besides reading books) to correspond to our space topic:

We made sure to light up this and this each night and take some time to stare up at the stars.

Gv painted glue all over a sheet of black construction paper,

then sprinkled glitter all over to make the night sky.

She had to add some flair with glitter glue pens, as well!

I planned to use these cookie cutters

along with a glass (to cut out planets) on some cookie dough, then decorate them for the solar system.

But then we didn't eat up our last dessert fast enough, so I opted to just make a new cracker recipe and then cut them into stars.

If you're anxious to make some star crackers yourself, these will work just fine.

I poured Gv's morning yogurt (thinned with a little vanilla) into a plastic bag one morning and let her slurp it up through a straw, just like an astronaut:

I printed out these colorful flash cards.  Gv had fun just cutting them out and sticking them in one of her plastic photo albums from the dollar store.

We also liked this free printable showing the relative sizes of the planets.  She cut it out (I just printed page 5) and taped it to the wall.

This pack has lots of cute activities.  We just printed page 17, which Gv was able to do herself.

We actually took turns making the marks, but she still pointed to the ones that I marked for her

I'd never had Gv try a maze, so I let her choose one to print from this (the rocket! the rocket!) and then I used the pen to follow her finger as she went through the maze.  (For some reason, this week she kept wanting me to do all the writing and coloring!)

I printed this, colored it (because she wanted to watch me do it), then had Gv tape all the planets to the wall, in order.

These planets really got around during the week - she'd stick one on my back (I kept getting Mars), one on G's, and one on herself so we could be those planets for the evening.

She also stuck them all around the computer monitor, so like I said, they really got around.

Gv stuck little stickers on the white dots on this printable of Earth.  (I went to take a photo of it when she'd finished, but it had disappeared!  I'm 99.9% sure it's under one of the couches right now, but I'm also 99.9% too lazy to go fish it out, so just imagine an Earth with stickers all over it.)

I printed this constellation sheet, then Gv cut out the squares and used a pen to punch out holes for each of the stars (She really enjoyed that part).

Just stick a folded-up towel under the paper so that the punching will work.

We taped them each over a flashlight to shine the constellations on the hall wall.

We ran out of time during the week, but I'd also had the idea to punch holes out of black construction paper in the shape of a constellation, then hang it in the window for the light to shine through.

I printed page 65 of this pack and Gv used a glitter glue pen to trace the path.

And I felt we'd reached our limit for the week, but I loved all the colorful graphics in this free pack.

And I'd thought about doing this and this, as well - such cute ideas!

  5. Looks like such an activity packed week! I love all the space projects - I'm a bit of space nut - especially the idea of using a torch and the constellation sheets. I'm going to pin this for when Marianna is a little older. :D #FridayFrivolity

  6. My daughter loves the planets! Those printables are so cute! It is so hard to find accurate kids activities about actual planets and not just pretend planets.
