10 Fingers/10 Commandments - Hand Motions to Help You Remember

This is a fun activity that we did to go along with our focus on Moses and the 10 Commandments during Gv's Latticed Learning time.

I figured that coming up with hand motions would help us remember which commandment was which.  This site gave me most of the ideas, but I modified them a bit:

Commandment 1

Hold up one finger to help remember to put God first.

Commandment 2

Hold up both index fingers, then make one "bow down" to the other to help remember to worship only God (and not bow to idols).

Commandment 3

It's not necessary to make this crazy face while doing this one - or stick your middle finger into your nostril!

Hold up three fingers (which also looks like a "W") helping you remember to say God's name with love and respect (or watch your words).

Commandment 4

Hold up four fingers, then lay your head down on them, to help you remember to keep the Sabbath holy (a day of rest).

Commandment 5

Hold up one hand (five fingers) and give a parent a high five to help remember to honor your parents.

Commandment 6

Hold up one hand (5 fingers) and then point your other hand's index finger at it like a gun to help you remember not to murder.  (If you don't feel comfortable acting out this gun thing, then it could be a knife to stab with or you could run that finger across your throat, too)

Commandment 7

Gv had the idea of how to do this and would hold her hands up, but couldn't quite get her fingers crossed.  Here we're working together to show you how it's done.

Hold up one full hand (these 5 fingers are the children) and then cross the index and middle fingers of your other hand (to show that the mom and dad/husband and wife are joined - kissing sound effects optional).  This will help you remember to be faithful in marriage.

Commandment 8

Use one whole hand to grab the center three fingers of your other hand to help you remember not to steal.

Commandment 9

You'll want the hand with 4 fingers to be facing down, but Gv did well enough just to tuck her thumb in.

Hold up a full hand and place four fingers of the other hand down on the table in front of you (like you're taking an oath) to help you remember to always tell the truth.

Commandment 10

No photo  of this one because Gv got so into the grabbing motion, I couldn't manage to get a photo that didn't look like a feather pillow factory exploded in a snowstorm.  Luckily, this one is pretty easy to imagine from the description:

Hold up both full hands and then grab for something in front of you to help you remember to be happy with what you have (and not be greedy for the things of others).

These hand motions were fun to do and really helped Gv remember what the 10 Commandments were.  I'm sure this will be even easier next year, when her finger dexterity has improved enough to do some of the more tricky moves with her fingers.

Do you any other ideas for ways to represent the 10 Commandments?  Which idea do you prefer for Commandment 6?  I'd love to hear!  Either leave a comment below or email me at lisahealy (at) outlook (dot) com.
