Welcome back to another installment of Latticed Learning! Today I'll be sharing the fourteenth week of our journey with you. You'll get a chance to see what we did, the resources we used (click here to see what we're using week after week), and hopefully come away with lots of fun ideas for things to do with your own little one!
Bible Lesson
Saul & Young David (pages 164-185 in this Bible and 141-147 in this one)Memory Verse
Matthew 18:20 - This is the fourteenth song on this album, which I've raved about before. I also created this card:
We posted this on the fridge (and will then add it to a mini photo album from the local dollar store when we take it down). I'm always amazed how quickly Gv can say her verse - minus the reference - each week!
You can download your own copy of this card for free here! Want the whole set right now? Get them here.

Saint
Nicholas (I know nothing about the lives of the saints, but when I saw these cuter-than-cute cards, I decided they gave me the perfect excuse to learn! They're honestly more for me than Gv at this point, although she can put the name to the card after having it up on the fridge and talking about it all week.)Letter

5 SensesShape
Square (I'm kind of going in order of vertices/sides and each one will last for several weeks.)Number
13 (Like I said in this post about the alphabet, we'll talk about all (well, maybe not all) the numbers every week, but I'm choosing one to focus on each week and you'll see some repetition as time goes on with a few of them.)Best Books We Read This Week
I used My Five Senses all the time in my classroom and I have both the regular book and a big book copy of it, which is all kinds of fun to spread out on the floor and look through - especially when you're turning pages as big as you are! This My Five Senses is a classic Aliki book and I really like how it talks about combining senses to observe different things.
I Use Science Tools is a great introduction to objects we can employ to better explore our environment, which of course relates to the senses, since we have to use the senses to use the tools!
Look, Listen, Taste, Touch and Smell has fun illustrations to help explore these fabulous five.
Fun with My Five Senses is packed full of great activity ideas for learning about the senses.
The 5 Senses is perfect for young learners and has cute illustrations, as well.
The Listening Walk is another Aliki book. I really like how it changed the focus of our family walks after we read it.
Other Great Books We Read
Christmas books!Want to check out our favorites? Follow my Celebrate the Season series here and find not only a featured book for each day leading up to Christmas, but great music and movies, as well.
Songs We Played By
I went through all the children's songs on my iPod and created a playlist just for this week. Here are some of the best selections from our list:
Where Two or Three from this album helped Gv learn our memory verse
Eight Hundred and Thirteen Mile Car Trip from this

And pretty much the rest of the time we've been listening to Christmas music - see our favorites by exploring the days listed on this post.
Videos We Explored
This video fit perfectly with our Bible lesson.
We did "N" things on this site.
We watched this clip and a few of the others for the letter "N."
This video had a connection with the number 13.
We played this video, although it was more to hear the song than to see the clip
I let Gv watch this short movie, which we got from the library.
How We Played
We did a few things to learn about the David and Goliath:First, I drew a Goliath face (that matched the one in our "green Bible") on a paper plate and taped it way up high onto the wall. I'd thought about taping it up at true giant height, but then realized Gv wouldn't be able to see it so well.
Next, I gave Gv 5 pairs of rolled-up socks to throw at him.
Many giggles ensued:
She had quite the routine for her Goliath attack - complete with a shot put-style spin before launching the sock! |
We filled a little tote bag with 5 stones from Gv's rock collection. This was followed by a long conversation about how these were just to look at, not to throw, like the socks!
We glued together 3 craft sticks (and then I wrapped the joint in duct tape, for extra durability) to make a slingshot frame and then I twisted a rubber band around the top before handing Gv 5 pom poms to shoot at various things around the house.
This one was a big hit.
Not even the Christmas tree was safe from a little girl named Gv, with her slingshot and her stone! |
I printed out these cute finger puppets so that Gv could act out the story with them:
Gv kept looking for a page with David to color in her Bible coloring book, but there wasn't one. I came across this and printed it out while we talked about how God looks at the heart and what's inside.
I also found all sorts of cute things to do that related to the 5 senses, but we've been doing so many Christmas activities, I decided to just stick with reading our books on the subject. I did make sure to point out how we were using the different senses while we did things like put up decorations and bake cookies, so it all really worked out pretty well, after all.
