Wheat Thins

I'm sure you've already realized that we love healthy, portable snacks, and homemade crackers pretty much top our list.

Our favorites are these sweet potato gems, but recently I've been playing around with some other recipes that I could whip up in a snap and tailor the flavors to easily match our mood.

I came up with this good, all-around cracker, but wondered if I could adjust it a bit to get it tasting more like a wheat thin.

G and I both think it does, but even if it's not a perfect clone, it's another tasty, simple cracker base that can be flavored however you want.

What You Need

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

4 Tablespoons softened butter

1 1/2 Tablespoons honey

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup water (or even whey!)

What You Do

1. Mix up everything but the water.

2.  Add in the water a little at a time - you might not use it all because you just want enough so that the dough sticks together (this makes for a lighter cracker).

3.  Roll the dough out onto a baking mat (which makes homemade crackers a snap) or a cookie sheet.  Usually I just score the dough with a pizza wheel, but sometimes I'm feeling fancy and use a cookie cutter to cut out cute shapes.

4.  Slide the crackers into the oven and bake them for 10 minutes at 400 degrees.

5.  Flip them over and bake for another 5-10 minutes (just keep an eye on them the first time you make them, since ovens are calibrated differently, then you'll know how long to keep them in for the future).  They'll continue to crisp up a bit while they're out of the oven, cooling.

Even though these crackers are delicious plain, we've also jazzed them up by adding cracked pepper, garlic (of course!), or various herbs and spices, depending on the mood of our taste buds that day.

It's another win - an easy, versatile cracker recipe to add to your snack list!

Have you tried making your own crackers yet?  What flavor combinations would you like to try with these?  I'd love to hear!  Either leave a comment below or email me at lisahealy (at) outlook (dot) com.

  5. Hey, you...stopping by from WFMW! I had to laugh when I saw your post because JUST this morning, my tween said, "Do we have any of those really square Wheat Thins?" (She means instead of the Wheat Thins chips or whatever they are that aren't quite square). Of course, we didn't. But I said, "HEY! My friend Lisa has a recipe for a homemade version." And then there you were at WFMW. Clearly, a sign from the Lord that I should get my act together and make these already. Maybe later today...;)
