I was so intrigued by this show's concept when I saw the review request pop up in my inbox:

Reading the synopsis obviously reminded me of this show that I love, however Testament stands out as portraying its story in an out-of-the-box way.

Not only is this series focused on the book of Acts instead of the life of Jesus, but it's also trying something new by operating outside of the confines of a historical drama.

While the setting of the story is very much an eerie, militant, dystopian society, the world feels very similar to our own, allowing the viewer to better connect with the characters and story in a more relatable way.

The series emphasizes the human element of the biblical figures, highlighting their relationships and doubts and centering around many of the social and political issues of today.

The story opens with the rush of Pentecost, sparking a movement that turns the world upside down by spreading hope amid chaos.

The followers risk everything to preach the good news in the stylized city of Salem, while the oppressive Imperium regime of the Temple races to silence them amidst public miracles, unburied secrets, and fractured loyalties.

One thing I most appreciated about this show was the focus on Stephen, a man who never met Jesus in the flesh yet came to faith through testimony and faith alone, and his struggles and interactions with the disciples, who walked with Jesus and were eyewitnesses to His ministry here on earth.

This character choice helps the audience relate to the story so well, since we're all in the same boat of faithfully trusting the accounts of what happened rather than relying on first-hand knowledge and experiences.

The three of us watched this show together and while we all agreed it was interesting (in a good way), we're also a bit unsettled--it definitely requires your patience and full attention to watch.

Not only were we engaged the entire time, but the show provoked several discussions afterward about how real and relevant the early church is to us today.

This powerful live-action series will challenge you, move you, and make you rethink what it means to truly follow Jesus. Set in a modern world, you'll connect with these stories and people like never before.
