Chocolate Hemp Spread

I've been making homemade nut and seed butter for a while, but the other day, I was craving something a little richer ‐ and what could be better than some chocolaty goodness spread on a slightly sweet banana bread muffin for a bit of a treat?

Besides fulfilling my desire for a little taste of bitter chocolate, this seed butter uses a base of hemp seeds, which are a fantastic super food that we use to amp up the nutritional value of smoothies, breads, and other baked goods.

Since most of our meals tend to be vegetarian in nature, adding things like hemp seeds to our dishes provide us with a complete source of protein, not to mention some good fats and loads of fiber.

I'll warn you that this is not a very sweet spread, so if that's what you're after, then be sure to increase the amount of sugar in this recipe.  Since I mainly put it on things like granola muffins and graham crackers (try using this in place of the candy bar in S'mores!), I depend on those to give me the little bit of sweet needed to balance out all the delicious bitter chocolate flavor in this seed butter.

What You Need:

2 cups hemp seeds

3 Tablespoons cocoa powder

2 teaspoons honey

What You Do:

1.  Blend everything up in something like a Ninja until it resembles peanut butter in its consistency.  If you've ever made a nut or seed butter from scratch, you know this will take a while, but it will eventually turn to butter.

2.  If you want the consistency a little creamier than what you're getting, feel free to add a bit of water (probably not more than 1 Tablespoon) or drizzle in a bit of nut or olive oil to help things along.

Do you like Nutella, or are you a chocoholic ‐ or do you just like the idea of spreading something a little more unusual onto your baked goods?  Does the thought of using nutrient‐dense hemp seeds get you excited, or have you running scared from the ganja police?  (Don't worry, it's not the same thing as a batch of special brownies!)  I'd love to hear - leave a comment or email me at lisahealy (at) outlook (dot) com.
