Dr. Seuss's ABC Photo Scavenger Hunt

My bloggy pal Hilary over at Raising Fairies and Knights started a fun new Monthly Crafting Book Club this year - a challenge to create activities to go along with some of the most beloved children's books out there.

The first installment focused on Sandra Boynton's Barnyard Dance, where I featured our Animal Action Dice Game from earlier in the year.

February's book was If You Give a Moose a Muffin, so I came up with a Cause & Effect Box to go along with the story.

This month's selection was Dr. Seuss's ABC, so I decided to make use of our handy little mini photo albums from the local dollar store (similar to these) and Gv, G and I set out for an alphabetical scavenger hunt.

This is an easy, active, and fun little project to do with your child - and is one that is perfect for any age!

The basic idea is to hunt around your house (or neighborhood, or park, or someplace else even more creative!) and look for things to take photos of that begin with each letter of the alphabet.

You could narrow down the theme - limiting your search to only toys, kitchen utensils, things in nature, signs with letters, etc. - the possibilities are endless and that's what makes it the perfect project for any age!

You could even do this with your high schooler and send them out to find things that represent abstract concepts (like emotions) or whatever topic they're focused on at the moment.

The three of us turned this into a family project one evening - we set out for a walk around the neighborhood and all tried to find things to take snapshots of.  We ended up with multiple photos for certain letters, but figured we could get creative and classify some things under different names to check letters off the list that we still needed.

We also had a couple of letters that we were all stumped on, so we just came up with things around the house to fill in those spots.

Here's what we found:

A is for Aloe Plant

B is for Boots

These boots are made for walkin'!

C is for Camper

D is for Dead End

E is for Electrical Box

F is for Fire Hydrant

G is for Gutter

Why walk on the street, when you can stomp through dead leaves in the gutter?

H is for Hedge

I is for Ice

Ugh. Somebody didn't close the freezer door firmly last night!

J is for Joker

K is for Killer Dog

I have no idea whether this dog is a killer or not, but he's always tied up in the yard and has a really nasty bark.

L is for Light

M is for Mailbox

N is for Needles

Pine needles, that is...

O is for Oak Tree

P is for Palm Tree

Q is for Quagmire

This swamp keeps our neighborhood's mosquito population alive, I'm sure.

R is for Rocks

S is for Stop Sign

T is for Trees

U is for Underbrush

V is for Vine

W is for Wheel

X is for Xylitol

Y is for Yellow

Z is for Zipper

We had such a great time working on this project together and I just know it will be one that we repeat often in the future (I can totally see this keeping us all occupied on long road trips or hikes!) - especially since playing The Alphabet Game is already one of our favorite things to do!

Have you ever done an ABC scavenger hunt with your kids?  I'd love to hear!  Either leave a comment below or email me at lisahealy (at) outlook (dot) com.

  9. Looks like a lot of fun!
Our kids are grown and we don't have grandchildren...
Makes me wish our kids were little, again.
We did a lot of fun things together.
But, there is always more fun to do.
Their grown before you know it.
