Great Skate Cake

My ridiculously creative friend made a super-fun skating cake for her daughter's eighth birthday party (held at the ice skating rink, of course).

See how she "figured" it out here...

When my good friend (and former figure skating student) told me her daughter wanted to have her birthday party at the ice rink, I squealed with delight.

When she told me that even though she lives an hour closer to another rink, she was going to have it at my ice rink, I squealed even louder.

But when Gv and I walked into the party room this past weekend after a long day of lessons and I saw what my fabulously clever friend did with the birthday cake, I was silent.

Because I never would have thought of what she did, but it was absolutely perfect.

I love this shot, because the sun shows the depth of the "ice rink" on top of the cake!

Not only did she incorporate a figure eight into the scene, but she created the coolest ice surface for her little skater to trace her birthday message on, as well.

She got her inspiration for this freshly-Zambonied rink from this cake idea. Since the birthday girl requested a chocolate cake, it was uber-important to make the mousse layer light enough to create a proper background for the blue-raspberry gelatin ice layer to rest on.

The original cake idea had a thin layer of gelatin on top, but my friend made hers nice and thick, adding to the effect of freshly cleaned ice.

She then "skated" the birthday wish across the top of the cake and used her skater drawing (from her equally fabulous homemade party invitations) to complete the tableau.

All she had to do was attach the skater off the invitation to a toothpick and send her slipping across the top of the cake!

Since she had to transport this great cake all the way to the next town, she needed to build a box for it. I never would have thought of this, either, but she just took a department store clothing box, cut it to the right size, taped it together and then traced her glass pan, upside down, to then cut out a hole for the top.

To camouflage the corner where she cut the box down, her daughter drew snowflakes with eight arms because she was turning eight!

Her daughter colored the skater, too -- I love how they worked on this project together!

It was a fabulous cake and a fun party to celebrate a special girl...and if, by some chance, Gv wants a skating-themed party at some point (year eight would be ideal), then I am totally stealing this super cake idea!

Do you think this great skating cake idea is as clever as I do?  I'd love to hear!  Either leave a comment below or email me at lisahealy (at) outlook (dot) com.
