Although I've never watched the ABC show, The Good Doctor, I was intrigued to learn that it was partially based on author Tyler Sexton's life. Plus, I'm a sucker for a good memoir, so I felt pretty confident that I'd enjoy this read:
We all face our own unique struggles in this life. It's not a contest about who's got it worse, but sometimes it's really helpful for me to encounter someone who has faced struggles that seem way beyond the level of what I could handle, just to put my own issues into perspective.
This uplifting book definitely achieved that goal!
Tyler Sexton was born with cerebral palsy, but overcame the obstacle to walk through the pain of having multiple surgeries. As a result of these challenges that he grew up with, he decided to follow God's call to become a pediatrician.
"No one wants a doctor with a disability," he was told. But God had other plans.
In addition to being told that he'd never make it as a physician and being constantly bullied throughout his school and college years, Tyler faithfully persevered to become a humble and joyful healer who now sports superhero t-shirts as he walks the halls of Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula, Mississippi, where he is the current chair of pediatrics.
He provides hope to children with disabilities (& their parents!) as well as other patients and is also one of the inspirations for the popular ABC television show, The Good Doctor.

But this book is so much more than just Tyler sharing his own struggles and triumphs. It was co-authored by his mom, who brings her own heartfelt perspective on what it was like to face these challenges from a parent's point of view.
If you're a parent, you'll feel all the feels from Lisa Sexton's story. And if you're not a parent, you'll still get plenty of feels from Tyler -- including the sweet love story of meeting his wife and the birth of their daughter to his special bond with his service dog, Danny!
This book is the perfect summer read: happy, uplifting, and a welcome breath of inspirational air during these continued crazy months of what has become our everyday lives.
