5 After 5, Childhood Books Edition

It's time for another round of 5 After 5!  In case you missed it, last week's list was 5 hits of the 80's you love and if you're new to this series, you can read more about it here.

Today I've got my list of 5 to share, as well as next week's topic for you to stew about over the upcoming days.

List 5 children's books you love

I struggled with which direction to take the list in this week.

I could choose five of the favorite books the Healys enjoy, or five books my students always adored, or five books that were special to me as a kid.

I started to nix that last idea, because I feel like I pretty much covered my favorite books earlier this year, but then I realized those were all books in a series, so I could just make this list five individual books that I loved:

1.  The Snowstorm

This is one that I doubt anyone's ever heard of, but it was my absolute favorite book.  It reminds me of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe a bit, because it centers on kids staying with a relative who then encounter a bit of magic and mystery and plenty of adventures along the way.

I can't wait to experience it again with Gv, when she gets a bit older!

2. Any Richard Scarry Book

I can't actually pick out any of his books in particular that I loved most, but that's only because I loved them all!

My favorite part of coming home with a Scarry book from the library?

Searching for the little worm throughout the pages!  

(Remember, this was in the days before "Where's Waldo" came to exist!)

3.  Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel

 

This book has always delighted the little engineer inside of me and, despite its age, never seems to get old!

4.  The Snowy Day

So many things to love about this book and I even remember re-enacting the whole thing in a Kansas blizzard when I had just reached school age.

These days, when I read it, I can't help but think of how "free range" this boy's life is!

5.  Little Bunny Follows His Nose

 

The copy of this book that we have was actually my copy, from my childhood.  Not that crazy to think of taking care of a book well enough for it to last that long, but it still smells just as strongly as it did 40 years ago!

How fun is that?

And the dill pickle page remains my favorite!
