Did you see my post last week about great reading incentive programs for kids?

Hopefully you found one that worked for your family and your children are well on their way to earning some fun rewards (and you're enjoying some much-needed relaxation time of your own!)

We're lucky to have a library just two miles down the road from us, but if yours isn't so convenient (or that great) and you're already running out of things to read around your house, then check out this list of books you can get for free over at Project Gutenberg:

In case you haven't heard of it before, Project Gutenberg is a site consisting of over 50,000 free books (including audiobooks) that you can download (epub & kindle) to your device or even read online.

How is this possible?  Well, these are books whose copyrights have expired, so now they're part of the public domain.

Yes, that means that these books are old, but you might be surprised to see what fantastic titles fall into this category:

  • The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
  • A Christmas Carol
  • Alice in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass
  • The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
  • Little Women & Little Men
  • Peter Pan
  • The Wind in the Willows
  • Uncle Remus books (if you're unsure about whether or not to read these, this blog series might help you make your decision)
  • The Jungle Book
  • The Story of Doctor Dolittle
  • Anne of Green Gables series
  • Black Beauty
  • Heidi
  • The Bobbsey Twins series
  • The Gift of the Magi

There are so many more wonderful classics over there on the site, but that list should be pretty good to get you started.

You can also easily search through categories such as "children's myths" and "fairy tales" to find plenty of stories that you'll want your kids to hear.

Other items of interest include:
  • Tuck-Me-In Tales
  • Anything by Edward Lear, in the "children's verse" category
  • The Book of Nature Myths
  • A Primary Reader: Old-time Stories

If you're a home-schooling family, then you might luck out and find various educational books (like McGuffey's Primer) and plenty of resources for different topics of study.

Really, there is so much to explore for children on this site, you might never need to go to the library again!

(I joke, because after all, we love the library around here!)

So anytime you're scrounging around and trying to find something for your kids (or yourself) to read, stop by Project Gutenberg and get lost in a good book!

Had you heard of this site before, and if so, have you ever downloaded books from it?  I'd love to hear what you found there, if you did!  Either leave a comment below or email me at lisahealy (at) outlook (dot) com.

It really is an amazing resource, so I hope you find some books that interest you on it! Thanks for taking the time to say hey today!
What a fantastic resource! I'll have to check this one out once the chaos is over here. (We have a week of fair and a week of camping coming up.) You had me at Anne (with an E). :)

Oh, my, a week of fair? It's always so weird to hear about fairs happening at this point (or later) in the year, because ours is held waaaay back in the beginning of February! Hope you survived both it and the camping (you know I want camping details!) and don't forget to check out this post of mine now that things have settled down a bit for you, Jamie!
Love love love Project Gutenberg! It can suck me down a rabbit hole faster than anything...
I found Project Gutenberg shortly after I got my Kindle. Like Sarah said, it's like going down the rabbit hole.

It really is, Audrey, but I love how I always have a "pile" of books sitting there on my Nook to fall back on (since all the rest I check out from the library).

I've read several classics thanks to the efforts of Project Gutenberg. If you're into audio books, give LibreVox a try. I downloaded and listened to Edgar Rice Burroughs' Princess of Mars series. They would have been a bit tedious to read, I think, but I thoroughly enjoyed listening to them on my walks. Have a great weekend and thanks for sharing with us at Creatively Crafty #ccbg

Thanks for the tip about Librevox-I haven't really listened to many audiobooks, but I just might have to try a few from here. So glad you stopped by to say hello today, Lydia!

I haven't heard of this site before. I'm in Canada, so I'm going to check their parameters for my download use but I would be thrilled if I could use this!

Thanks for sharing (and for linking up to the #SHINEbloghop).

Wishing you a lovely weekend.
xoxo

I would think that it wouldn't be an issue for anyone to download, since these books are in the public domain. You'll have to let me know what you find out!
The classics are always great, and it's never a bad thing. Thanks for sharing with the Cozy Reading Spot.

Even when I feel I've read a ton of classics, I come across one that's new to me, so I always feel like the list is limitless! Thanks for stopping by to say hey, Marissa!
This is so cool! I download free books from bookbub for me, I enjoy reading them as I relax in a bubble bath, and there are many classics on your list that I'd love to read! You are the best, I love a free book and I don't even have to get dressed and go to the library! Yippee!

My mom is always talking about bookbub, but I just haven't gotten around to checking it out yet, probably because I have so many titles sitting there waiting for me to read from this site (or the library!) Our library is only 3 minutes from our house, but even that seems like a pain and too far to go, sometimes, so it's great to just sit on my couch and download a new book! So happy you chimed in today, Nikki!

I love Audio Books makes reading such a breeze and and our little ones are spoilt for choice. We just have to monitor the sound levels if we let them use eaphones! Or better still listen with them openly. thanks for sharing at the Pit Stop

I've been too scared to let my 3-yr-old use earphones, but I've played her a couple of audiobooks on the stereo before. It's funny, I've never really listened to any myself before. Thanks for stopping by and chiming in today!
I love reading free books on my tablet. I am trying to work through the top 100 of all time novels. Thanks for sharing with #CCBG

Oooh, what a fun idea - to read the top 100 all-time novels! I'm totally heading off to Google that list right now and see how many more I have to read! Thanks for sharing that idea, Janet!
Okay, so I Googled it and now I'm curious - which list are you working off of?
What?! OMG! Thank you!

You are SO welcome, Lux! And it's great to see you around these parts again!
We are big fans of Project Gutenberg and, even more of Librivox.org! Finding all these classics in both audio and ebook form for FREE is so wonderful for homeschooling! Thanks for sharing this at Booknificent Thursday on Mommynificent.com this week!

Hmmm, another Librivox fan - I will definitely have to check these audiobooks out for myself! I especially like your idea about getting both the ebook and audiobook - I did that from Project Gutenberg on a couple of the read-aloud books in my classroom, but I need to try it with some others, too. Thanks for chiming in today!
