I've always loved maps.
I was also always pestering my poor dad every 5 minutes on family road trips with the same question.
"What mile marker are we at now?"
Oh, yes, I was following our route just that closely.
And I've already been dragging Gv into this obsession - just check out what we did last year for one of our Latticed Learning weeks!
One of her favorite parts of that week centered around the book Me on the Map. If you're familiar with that book, you know that the little girl places herself on different maps - starting with her room and ending with the universe.
It's so much fun to make all those different connections, which is why I was so excited to discover The Incredible Intergalactic Journey Home - it visits similar locations, but in reverse and completely customized to your child's exact address!
Not only that, but there are photos of each stop along the way - including a local town landmark (it was interesting to see ours - not one that I'd expect, but definitely one that makes our city unique) as well as an aerial shot of our home!
I knew Gv had to have this book, because she loves poring over maps just as much as I do!
Just like Lost My Name's other title, everything about this book makes me smile - each page is loaded with vibrant, fun illustrations and clever rhyming text, which will take your child on the journey of a lifetime that will amaze and excite at every turn!
The fun of this book begins with your order. Navigating around the website feels more like a day at an amusement park than an exchange with some cold vendor - the quirky personality of the company shines through with every click you take.
You can even get an idea of what your final book will look like before you ever spend the first cent!
Your first step is to enter your child's name, pick the appropriate gender and then choose one of three illustrated astronauts as the main character.
Next, you enter in all the location information: country, house number, street name, city, and zip code.
Our address showed up right away in the "closest address" box on that page, but I'm guessing that some homes might be a bit more out in the country than ours and not as easy to precisely pin down, so it asks you to select the closest match.
Poof! Up popped an aerial photo on the next page of our very house!
You're asked to check inside the white circle here to make sure it correctly encompasses the child's home and you can even make any adjustments that are necessary.
We've got a patch of boring woods near our house, so I actually shifted the circle just a little bit to include more of the interesting surroundings for our home.
Once you've gotten the name and address information all settled for your order, you're able to personalize the dedication page, which is especially perfect if you were giving this book as a gift!
Just before you check out and pay, you choose your language (from a list of 8!). Then your book is shipped out to you (for free!) and arrives on your doorstep within days, even though it's custom-made!
The minute Gv and I cracked open the cover of this gem, we knew it would be just as great as their other high-quality title.
A little girl decides to avoid bedtime by exploring space instead - and before she knows it, she's zipping past a constellation of stars that are spelling out her name!
From that moment on, Gv's name was used. She was so tickled to find it each time she turned the page!
All is not fun and games, however, when the ship's navigation system is destroyed - poor little Gv realizes that's she's completely lost - what's a girl to do?
Some wacky space friends point her in the right direction - starting with the Milky Way, then to Earth, then to the US, then to Florida, then right to our town and very doorstep!
Little Gv wakes up (you knew it was all a dream, didn't you?) and sees her full address taped to the opposite wall - now she'll never forget where she lives again!
Gv and I have read this book over and over since it arrived, and it's just a total blast each time we crack it open.
This book is obviously perfect for your own children (think unique Christmas gift - you could even craft the dedication so that the book is given by Santa!) but it would also make an awesome gift for another child, as well.
My favorite idea? Build a collection of these books for every home your child lives in while growing up - especially perfect for military families, where the states and countries might change just as often as the homes!
