Welcome back to Latticed Learning!  This year, we're continuing to learn while we play - repeating many of our favorites from last year while adding in all sorts of new activities as well.

This day's post is devoted to our weekly Bible stories - some weeks have more activities than others, but each lesson will help your little one grow closer to God!

Read the Bible

Pages 303-307 in this Bible and 211-217 in this one

Read a Little More

I came across two promising books for this week's Bible story:

Sing Some Songs

Two songs immediately popped into my head for this week's story. Neither one is explicitly about Jesus' baptism, but they're both full of baptismal imagery and beautiful, so we stuck with them:

Come Thou Fount

Down to the River to Pray

Watch Some Videos

We love these little videos from Saddleback Church, so this one was perfect for this week.

As was this one by Crossroads Kids' Club:

This was another quick one we watched:

Play and Create

We did a couple things to learn more about Jesus' baptism:

We first made this craft stick puppet set, using the graphic here:

I just folded up the bottom of a sheet of blue construction paper and glued it closed on the sides, then I cut a tiny slit in the bottom so Gv could "dunk" the Jesus on a stick in the water.  We added the dove after she demanded it.

Somebody's been listening to the story!

Then we made a handprint dove:

I seriously wonder when Gv will get tired of tracing and cutting out her hand for projects like this, because I honestly don't see it happening for years and years...

The good news is that it's so easy to do - just trace the hand onto white paper, cut it out, glue it on some blue construction paper for the sky, add a yellow beak and googly eye, and you're set!

We printed the one-page story from here and chose five pictures to hang on the wall for our sequencing reminders.

We also folded paper into a dove, using the pattern here.

Finally, we did a real art project:

A joint-effort project!

I drew the dove shape onto a piece of printer paper, cut two layers of them and then taped each one onto a sheet of watercolor paper for me and Gv to create the white space on our painted pages.

We'd been discussing the differences between warm and cool colors in art lately, so she decided that I would paint a warm background for the dove and she would paint a cool one.

While I was painting my dove, Gv was accidentally tipping over her cup of water, soaking her paper all the way through.

Since we have to be so frugal around here, I told her she couldn't have another sheet of special paper (luckily, it would dry, but she wanted to paint now), but she could share my painting with me.

So, after I finished all of my declining-striped warm strokes, she came along and added her own inclining-striped cool strokes.

Which resulted in a rainbow, which you know made me terribly happy.

After the painting dried and we removed the dove paper, I added the appropriate verse and we admired our work.

We might just be framing this to hang it up in her room!
