Friday Frivolity - Favorite Cheese Edition

It's time for this week's edition of Friday Frivolity - the blog party for all things fun, funny, hopeful & happy!

Just wait until you see what we dug up for this week's theme...

At last week's party, we shared our favorite beers.

This week brings us National Grilled Cheese Day, which got me thinking about cheese (mmmmm, cheeeeeese!) and all my favorite types, which I could easily use to make a grilled cheese sandwich, although all my favorites might not go equally as well with tomato soup...

1. Brie

One of my favorite parts of traveling overseas is how often the places I stay at provide this cheese for breakfast, because I just love it's creamy-goodness!

G will often spoil me and bring home a wheel of it so then I can pretend to be breakfasting some place exciting like Liège or Reims rather than at my boring old desk.

The only problem is that Gv is also in love with it -- and that girl can put away slices of brie-with-jam toast like nobody's business -- so I have to hide it and horde it if I want more than a quarter of the wheel for myself!

2. Smoked Gouda

I fell in love with this cheese at a wedding ages ago and G and I discovered the best version of it when we visited The Netherlands one year.

We also learned that it is correctly pronounced "How-da," although that "H" is more of a guttural, hacking-up-some-flem kind of sound, which the Dutch are such masters of (try also saying Vincent Van Gogh for more flem-hacking awesomeness!)

3. Red Dragon

Our local Whole Foods prints these incredible $15 off $75 (or sometimes even $50!) coupons which make shopping there for a few select items (along with their case discount, did you know about this?) possible for us, even on our shoestring dental-floss budget.

They also have a little basket with wrapped-up, leftover hunks of pricey-per-pound cheese for $2 or less that allows us to sample small bits of the fancy stuff for a treat.

This cheese was one of our special tries and I fell in love with its snappy flavor -- so much so that it's become a staple for our Christmas Eve meal.

4. Horseradish Cheddar

I'm not sure that this version is the exact one I've had and loved, but it was another El Cheapo Whole Foods Basket Discovery that has made it to my list of favorites when it's time to splurge.

Can you tell I like intense flavor? Must come from eating all those gobs and gobs of garlic cloves...

5. Anything stinky and moldy

This photo shows Parmesan, which is neither stinky nor moldy, but it is delicious and another of my favorites -- especially really high-quality Parm with all those crunchy bits inside! (I figured after putting you through my Dutch flem-hacking lesson, I wouldn't subject you to a photo of really disgusting, moldy cheese!)

Like I said, I like intense flavor, so I also happen to be one of those weirdos who likes stinky, moldy cheese.

G loves it too, which was one of the quickest ways we determined we were a great match. (How else would I find someone to love me and all my garlic and stinky-cheese essence?)

Now time for the new stuff!

Cheese is one of those things that we always joke about. My hubby says there isn't a cheese he's met that he doesn't like!!!

  3. I'm sorry, but you'll have to bear with me while I adjust to the fact that my world has just been shaken. I've been pronouncing it "Goo-duh" in my head for 48 years. Honestly, I don't see any way I can correct that in the time I have left. I guess I just won't ever buy that cheese again. Sob.

  4. Love all of the above, especially brie with some currant jelly (German favorite). Thanks for making me cheese-hungry, lol.

  5. Love it!!! Cheese is one of my favorite foods. When I was a kid, my dad and I ate so much cheese my mom resorted to grating it and freezing it to keep us out of it. And my husband and I both love Gouda. Fun to know how to pronounce it as well. I will definitely be working on my flem-hacking sound skills :0) Have a beautiful week Lisa!
