Friday Frivolity - Favorite Hobbies

It's time for this week's edition of Friday Frivolity - the blog party for all things fun, funny, hopeful & happy!

Just wait until you see what we dug up for this week's theme...

At last week's party, we shared some books we plan to read this year.

This week, we're sharing our favorite hobbies. I have to admit, I have more hobbies/things I'm interested in than I have time for, but here are five that I really enjoy (even if I never seem to get the chance to do any of them):

1. Reading

This is my bedside stack (as opposed to the library stack, or my "take-it-with-me" stack...) -- note the full basket on the floor (& the Nook is full of books to read at night, too!)

Really, did you expect anything else to be on this list?

This is easily my favorite thing to do -- and probably the only one that I get the chance to do on a regular basis (usually two or three times a day!)

2. Cross-Stitching

These came back to me when my grandmothers died...

I thought I was especially clever with this one, since my Grandma (who was a quilter) was named Beatrice!

Somewhere way back in my college days, I got into cross-stitching. I'd done some simple kits throughout the years, but suddenly realized that this was an activity I could do while watching Mad About You and the first days of Friends & ER each week and not feel like a total couch potato.

The thing is, I like to have a point to whatever I'm making, so that meant going out and choosing cross-stitch kits for everyone I knew and loved and then forcing these gifts upon them.

I made one for myself (I was into wolves at the time):

This hangs above our master toilet, but I'm about ready to replace it with a more-functional cabinet.

Then I saved one for someday when I had a baby:

This one & one I did for my mom are my favorites!

3. Crocheting

3 of the afghans I made for myself...can you tell which is my favorite?

After I'd cross-stitched gifts for literally everyone I knew, I didn't know what to do with myself. Well, unless someone I knew got married or had a baby, because then I could whip up another project for that ocassion...

So I turned to crocheting, because everyone needs an afghan on their couch, right?

Or two, or three...

I actually made a bunch of these for myself, but I've also filled my poor parents' family room with plenty, as well.

4. Playing Piano

Someone else has always loved the piano, too!

Every so often I walk past the piano, sit down, and then suddenly it's six hours later and G walks in the door and not only is dinner not ready, but -- whoops, I forgot to eat lunch, too.

I keep telling myself that I should play more often and then maybe I wouldn't get sucked into wanting to play all my favorite songs, but somehow that never seems to happen.

Rest assured, dear reader, than when I play, I am fully clothed!

Maybe the trick is to find a new song or two to learn, because then that would force me to spend shorter amounts of time playing each day.

She plays more often than I do!

5. Cycling

The last time I decided to get back into biking, this happened. (Click here if you missed that story the first time around.)

I actually used to do this one pretty regularly, but not since Gv was born. I can definitely relax after slipping in my earbuds and hitting the trail for 30-or-so miles by myself, but it's just not as fun to leave my Gs to head off for a couple hours alone when our time together as a family is so limited!

Now time for the new stuff!
