I added "Hike the AT" to my bucket list after traversing the West Highland Way in Scotland years ago (read snippets here and here for a small taste). Although I'd love to enjoy more long-distance backpacking adventures with G and Gv in the future, I'm not so sure that 2,000+ miles of it is quite so appealing to me today as it was way back then.
We have, however, talked about adding a climb up to the final AT summit of Mt. Katahdin on one of our massive family summer road trips, so we'll see if that satisfies the "AT itch" without the half-a-year time investment.
The interest in that particular mountain is just one reason I was excited to see this movie:
For Gv, this movie's appeal stemmed more from her enjoyment of Newberry Award-winning survival stories like this and this -- both of which she's suggested to several friends as "must reads."
Additionally, I'd noticed that Sylvester Stallone produced this film, and while I tended to think more of his acting in flicks like this and this when I hear his name, I felt hopeful that his involvement meant this would be a high-quality movie.
That proved to be true.
Lost on a Mountain in Maine is based on the bestselling book of the same name (which we've now added to our "to be read" pile!).
It's the inspiring true story of 12-year-old Donn Fendler who, separated from his family by a fast-moving storm, must fight to stay alive while lost for nine-days in the remote wilderness of northern Maine. Donn’s disappearance captures national headlines and sparks a massive search effort attracting hundreds of volunteers, including his own father--who fears he may never see his son again.
This movie felt like part action, part drama, and part documentary -- and we loved getting to see and hear bits of footage from the real people behind the movie's characters.
In fact, that aspect of the movie really drove up the suspense for us -- we kept waiting for the name of the person to pop up so we could see if this man would turn out to be Donn.
When he didn't show up, we started to fear the worst, but -- spoiler alert -- he survived:
The real-life Donn finally shows up at the end of the film, and we all heaved a sigh of relief after the harrowing journey we'd just followed him on.
Sample a taste of the movie yourself from this trailer:
While this isn't so much a movie that you sit back and are entertained by, it's a worthy one that's delivered in an interesting way and makes you stop and think about how small decisions can result in huge consequences.
It's a film that will surely inspire discussion with your family and is one that you can all sit down and watch together.
Whether you enjoy survival stories, share our love for the great outdoors and hiking, or are just looking for an interesting tale of fortitude, this movie will likely be a unique addition to your family watch list.
