Welcome back to Latticed Learning! This year, we're continuing to learn while we play - repeating many of our favorites from the past while adding in all sorts of new activities as well.
This day's post is devoted to our weekly themes - some weeks have more activities than others, but each lesson will be fun for you to explore with your little one!
Read All About It
The Adventures of Big Bird in Dinosaur Days - It's always fun to learn about new things with the gang from Sesame Street! This small book will help little ones learn about dinosaurs while having fun with Big Bird at the same time.
Dinorella - A version of Cinderella that's loaded with alliteration (which is great for pre-readers to hear!) I've read this thing countless times and my tongue still gets all twisted up!
Dinosaur ROAR! is a board book with fun illustrations that focuses on opposites. It's one we've enjoyed reading since Gv was a tiny baby.
If the Dinosaurs Came Back was always a hit in my classroom, probably because it's got such silly ideas in it! We have a few other Bernard Most books, but this one was easily Gv's favorite.
Gigantosarus Numbers not only features gigantic lizards, but it's a gigantic book, as well! This big board book is loads of fun not only because of its great size, but because of all the dinosaur counting you get to do on each page.
The Littlest Dinosaurs
How Big Were the Dinosaurs?
My Visit to the Dinosaurs

Sing Some Songs
We listened to these selections this week:
This song and Dinosaur Round from the album I talked about here continued the dino theme.
We Are the Dinosaurs off of one of our favorite albums remained in my head all week.
We didn't watch this one, but I thought this dinosaur video looked cute for when Gv is older.
And we haven't seen this movie, either, but most everyone in our homeschool playgroup has and loves it.
We did several things to correspond to our topic this week:
We took a trip to see a special dinosaur exhibit that a not-so-nearby university museum had going on:
We did this with the cousins and Gv's creative aunt made little dinosaurs on leashes for everyone to walk around with during our visit:
When we got home, we spent quite a bit of time playing with that leashed dino and a couple of others (just from the dollar store):
The museum had this really neat interactive display where you could "dig" for your own fossils:
We recreated that a bit here at home with a box full of pom poms and little dino figurines.
We had lots of fun stomping around like giant lizards while listening to the great songs for the week.
We also played with this fun snap-on book that I'd had in my classroom.
Gv had received this for a birthday gift and I'd saved it to investigate this week:
She spent a good chunk of time playing with it afterward, too:
This album by Jack Hartmann had two dinosaur songs on it that were really fun to dance to.

She also found matching neon green can't-lose-these-kids-in-a-crowd shirts and crafted little dino hair bows out of tiny plastic figurines and ribbon for each one! |
Close-up of the leashed lizard so you can recreate this genius idea on your own! (Just tie a ribbon around the dino and then tie the other end to a bracelet) |
When we got home, we spent quite a bit of time playing with that leashed dino and a couple of others (just from the dollar store):

This was the least-blurry shot I got - the kids LOVED this exhibit! The "dirt" was shredded rubber, like used on playgrounds. |
Gv extended the fun by adding pom poms to this dino's back |
We also played with this fun snap-on book that I'd had in my classroom.
Gv had received this for a birthday gift and I'd saved it to investigate this week:
Your very own ball of dino poop to explore... |
This one was an omnivore... |
She spent a good chunk of time playing with it afterward, too:
The poop is modeling clay, so you can press your discoveries back into it... |
...and create a fossil! |
